JAMES CHANCE & THE CONTORTIONS

Monday 18 March 2019 2019

The controlled chaos of James Chance & The Contortions can not be ignored from the no-wave history. Led by the eccentric and immensely charismatic saxophonist and singer James Chance, the formation completely turned the New York scene from the 70s upside down with their mix of punk and free jazz. History repeats itself at Paard on March 18th , because James Chance & The Contortions will completely turn Paardcafé upside down .

Where to start? James Chance and company appeared on the legendary compilation album ‘No New York’, where Lydia Lunch and DNA can be heard and none other than Brian Eno co-produced . After the  No Wave scene  was over in a flash, the group focused more and more on the avant-garde improvisation. What was the result of that? As if you are listening through a punk filter to the improvisations of Ornette Coleman and the rock-solid beats of James Brown. One leg firmly in the punk, and the other in the free jazz.

“ ''The sound of The Contortions is a strange blend of dance and punk, with some improvisational jazz thrown in for good measure—there’s scarcely a Contortions track that doesn’t have a saxophone screeching and fluttering in the front of the mix or a dissonant organ passage at one point or another.'' “
