REWIRE FESTIVAL 2014 – Day 2

Saturday 8 November 2014 2014

Rewire is an annual international festival for adventurous, contemporary music. The festival presents a broad and eclectic programme with the focus on various forms of electronic music, neo-classical, new jazz, experimental pop, sound art and multidisciplinary collaborations. Alongside the main programme, the festival hosts and encourages a film programme and a number of educational projects and talks. JAMES HOLDEN live (UK)James Holden’s stock has risen in the Netherlands over the last few years; due no doubt to the success of his ambitious second album, 2013?s The Inheritors. Described by Pitchfork as “a raging bonfire of electro-acoustic composition”, this mind-blowing album drew on psychedelia, electronic experimentation and good old fashioned EDM in equal measure. Holden’s live shows are equally expansive, fleshing out his stage sound with modular synthesizer, drums and saxophone. At Rewire, he will play The Inheritors using a live band; supported by drummer Tom Page (Rocketnumbernine, a Rewire 2012 act) and saxophonist Etienne Jaumet (Zombie Zombie).

GOLD PANDA (UK)
The celebrated English DJ and producer Gold Panda (aka Derwin Schlecker) creates forward-thinking dance music that draws from dub step, witch house and electronica in equal measure. His debut album Lucky Shiner (released on the back of a slew of re-editing and remixing work for the likes of Telepathe, Bloc Party, Simian Mobile Disco, Health and The Field) was praised for its breadth of ambition, and its attempts to balance “songs with structure” alongside expressive passages of experiemental electronica, and crashing beats. Gold Panda is currently touring on the back of his recently released second full studio album, Half Of Where You Live.

THE FIELD(SE)
Stockholm-born and Berlin-based, The Field a.k.a. Axel Willner is best known for his atmospheric ambient techno, often based round a steady ‘motorik’ beat, and complemented by perpetually rotating hooks. This formula (originally driven by his preference for Buzz – a software program he still uses to make music today) has served him well; from early releases such as Love vs. Distance, and his acclaimed debut LP From Here We Go Sublime through to his latest LP, 2013?s Cupid’s Head.

ITAL (US)
Daniel Martin-McCormick has pursued various musical paths; most notably guitar and vocal duties for his dance/noise group, Mi Ami. Now, operating as Ital, Martin-McCormick creates complex, seductive dance music that seems to draw inspiration from all quarters. And Ital’s recently released album, Endgame is inspired by “recent excursions into psychedelics, ‘acopalyptic’ strains of minimalist composition, and his sense of éerily ubiquitous post-golobalization culture-leveling”.

CABARET CONTEMPORAIN (FR)
Cabaret Contemporain are five independent and avant garde French musicians: compromising of composers, improvisers, producers and a sound engineer. Cabaret Contemporain looks to create an ever-evolving sound from disparate elements; such as game modes and prepared piano. The sound the band creates veers from out and out improvisation, minimal techno, elements of the Krautrock canon and neo-classical. At Rwire Cabaret Contemporain will be joined by Etienne Jaumet, of Flop, the Married Monk, and the acclaimed Zombie Zombie.

COLIN STETSON (CA)
Saxophonist Colin Stetson’s sonic version is so ambitious, one could be forgiven in believing his goal is to mutate into a one man version of a complete wind ensemble, including percussion. Stetson is famous for coaxing the strangest sounds from his saxophone to create both rhythm, melody and bass. To do this he utilises circular breathing techniques as well as microphones placed on his instrument and vocal cords. His technical virtuosity and vivacious compositions can be heard on his last album, New Histroy Warfare Volume 2; an LP that conjured up a music described by incendiary magazine as “overplayed, warped, and kicked about the room, until all possibilities are expended”. Stetson has worked with Bon Iver, Tom Waits and Arcade Fire.

FIIUM SHAARRK (AT/UK)
Fiium Shaarrk is a ‘three headed musical beast’; made up from the talents of Rudi Fischerlehner (drums), Isambard Khroustaliov (electronics) and Maurizio Ravalico (percussion). A heady and often unquantifiable mix of proto-dance grooves, live electronics, modern classical and modern percussion, Fiium Shaarrk’s music can be described as visceral, cerebal and sometimes visionary; drawing succour from wide impressionistic passages of sound and painstakingly precise beats. Fiium Shaarrk draw inspiration from a wide range of musical influences; from Tortoise to king Crimson, Max Roach to Napalm Death, Autechre to Xenakis, and Dubstep to Maracatu. However, the band assure us that their explorative music is “adressed to men and women of today”.

DNMF (Dead Neanderthals + Machinefabriek) (NL)
DNMF is a collaboration between Dutch heavy jazz duo Dead Neanderthals and Dutch ambient/drone experimentalist Machinefabriek. Taking inpiration from such notables as H.P. Lovecraft, and drawing energy from ancient cosmic entities, they have, like Lovecraft, peered “over the rim into fathomless chaos of eternal night”. and managed to create their own from of hideous (and musical) monstrosity. Their latest LP, DNMF was released in September 2014.
