Nick picked up a guitar in 2000 and hasn’t put it down since. Initially content with learning songs for campfire sing-a-longs, what started off as a hobby quickly developed into a passionate adventure! Nick found a welcome outlet in embracing his creativity and soon began to write and record songs of his own.
After an extended trip overseas to Europe, North America and Mexico, Nick found a new appreciation for the stark contrast between the Australian lifestyle and that of the world community. This fuelled his writing and desire to capture the emotions and lessons of life’s stories through song.
The Awkward Family
Jorge “Yun” Galindo is a mexican singer and songwriter who travelled to the Hague in early 2011. After moving in with fellow-musician Helene Mathelemuse, Yun met Aaron Ahrends, a German producer studying at the Royal Conservatory. Back in ’11, Yun was performing with local musicians and international students in the Hague and Rotterdam, blending his own influences with those of his cohorts. These experiences made a mark on him, as he had pursued a rather solitary approach to music before that. However, Yun felt a bit disenchanted with the scene as there weren’t many venues to perform nor genres to explore within the city. Soon after meeting Ahrends, who in turn introduced him to Pascal Karier and Paul Rundel, Yun began to give shape to the songs he had imagined throughout the year. Yun and Helene had been playing at an Irish pub on Saturdays, followed by a dj set from Ahrends and Karier, hinting at the contrasting sound of the future band. Thus was born The Awkward Family, a group of globetrotters with a sound reminiscent of the freak/folk of the mid noughties that borrows from the electronic leanings of Ahrends, Karier and Rundel. As a multicultural musicianship, the Awkward Family fought hard to merge their individual visions to create a musical whole, and their joint search for undefinable melody gave way to a sound seldom heard in the area which they called home. Yun went back to Mexico to complete his university degree, and hopes to return triumphantly to the Netherlands for the comeback of a band that never quite existed.
