“The Netherlands has a housing crisis. In the recent elections, it was consistently one of the most important topics. There is a severe shortage of affordable housing: people have to wait for years for a social rental home or pay full price for a roof over their heads. How did it get to this point? And why isn’t housing affordable for everyone?
It’s time for a new housing policy. At the same time, we see that cities in the Netherlands are changing. Gentrification is causing the streetscape in some neighborhoods to change, to the point of being unrecognizable. More and more residents are noticing that they are slowly being pushed out of their familiar surroundings and are not being included in how the future city is being shaped. Who does the city belong to? Residents should really be given influence and a say in what their living environment will look like,” says Politieke Jongeren founder Nugah.
