Paardcafé: AMAGUK

Thursday 11 April 2024 2024

AMAGUK is an ambitious power-trio driven by their shared passion for creating innovative music.

Led by guitarist and composer Daniel Denis, each member is equally important and irreplaceable in their collaboration. They work seamlessly together to create powerful compositions that blend jazz, punk, D&B, and Mediterranean-influenced sounds, resulting in an inimitable and unique sound somewhere between King Crimson, Jojo Mayer, and Black Midi.

Their hard work and commitment to their music have led them to leave their home countries of Spain, Italy, and Greece to make a new home in Rotterdam. In 2019, the band released their first EP Amaguk, followed by their first album Resilient Forest in 2021, which they presented with beautiful merchandise. They are set to release a second EP, recorded live in February 2023, and record their second album by the end of the year. These highly anticipated works are sure to showcase their continued growth and evolution as musicians.

Over the last few years, they have independently organised tours in London, Spain, Greece, Berlin, and the Netherlands and performed at important international festivals such as North Sea Jazz, WOMAD, and Music Meeting among many others. In 2019, they were awarded as Best Soloists of the Erasmus Jazz Prize. What sets AMAGUK apart from other bands is their unconventional setup, lacking a bassist. Instead, they have modified their instruments to alternate the bassist’s role, combined with a deep understanding of effects and electronics, allowing them to be more experimental and free with their compositions, resulting in a unique sound.

AMAGUK is more than just a band. These friends understand that fighting for their dreams and aiming for success is necessary to make this journey away from their families worthwhile. They value each member’s contribution and work tirelessly to ensure everyone is heard and appreciated. This exciting journey as a family to musical success took a new turn when they recently announced a collaboration with Dox Amsterdam. This partnership marks a pivotal moment in the band’s development, and is sure to open up a wealth of new possibilities for their music.
