Sunday 26 January 2020 8371

This is a concert with seats and takes place in the Grote Zaal.

The enchanting Naghash Ensemble combines the spirituality of Armenian folk songs, neo-classical music and post-minimalism with the energy of rock and jazz. Three fantastic female vocalists (twice a soprano and an alto), assisted by phenomenal musicians on Armenian instruments such as duduk, oud and dhol. The American-Armenian composer John Hodian leads the ensemble on the piano through music based on the sacred texts of the Armenian poet and priest M’krtich Naghash.

The result is ‘Songs of Exile’, a story about the relationship between man and God, from the perspective of a monk in exile. A moving journey through the folk tales of medieval Armenia. In the words of NPR “East meets West and antiquity meets modernity in this collection of ruminations, lamentations and incantations. Highly intriguing yet accessible.”

“ The Naghash Ensemble brought an enchanting elixir of sounds based on Armenian folklore and centuries-old poetry “
