The role of water in Black history and identity.

DTM Funk began researching this subject after reading a poem about Black people being afraid of water. This led him to notice how often water appears in Black music, both visually and symbolically. A powerful example is the Detroit duo Drexciya, whose mythology imagines the unborn children of African women who died during the Middle Passage surviving underwater and creating a new aquatic civilisation. For DTM Funk, water represents memory, loss and trauma, but also survival, transformation and imagination.Through this listening session, he explores these connections between music, Black history and identity.
