JALAN JALAN: FARADAYS

Saturday 22 August 2026

Pop artist Faradays found old cassette tapes belonging to her mother containing gamelan music — the traditional Indonesian music that played in the living room during her childhood. She sampled percussive beats and Javanese scales and completed the sound with her characteristic intimate vocals and brooding synths.

This year, she is coming out with her new Indo-pop sound. A sound that blends echoes from Indonesia with electronica, indie pop, and hip-hop elements. On stage, she completes this world with dancers who literally embody Indo-European culture down to their fingertips. A series of singles will be released starting this summer, with the full album GAMELAN on the horizon. Faradays is the artist name of songwriter and producer Karindra Perrier. She debuted with the EP Memories in 2019 and toured the country as a 3voor12 Popronde Talent, 3FM KX Talent, and support act for Blaudzun and The Japanse house. She then won the Up: Next prize, giving her the opportunity to work on her gamelan record for an extended period. After years of experimentation in a creative cocoon, there is now a unique mix of East and West, old and new, ready for the outside world.

This concert is part of the Jalan Jalan Festival, which takes place in The Hague with Jalan Pedis on the Lange Voorhout as the central location. Visit Jalanjalanfestival.nl for more information.

Why Jalan Jalan? In 2023, the final edition of the Tong Tong Fair took place in the Indonesian capital of the Netherlands: The Hague. The absence of this event leaves a gaping hole in the heart for many. The smell of durian upon entry, the performances, the meeting of family members from far and wide – and then the food. The choice of countless stalls in the food district delighted many a Tong Tong.

Driven by this deeply felt need for a large-scale gathering and celebration of Indonesian culture, we set out. We spoke with various members of cultural and social organizations and five generations of migrants from Indonesia. Together, we devised an initiative that brings the community together and allows Indonesian culture to stimulate all the senses: The Jalan Jalan Festival. The name “Jalan Jalan” literally means walking or wandering and evokes the scent of sambal, the sound of stories, and the colors of batik. As a festival, Jalan Jalan invites its visitors to move freely through the city and through layers of performing arts, cultural heritage, memory, and imagination.
