GNAWA FESTIVAL: TAMIKREST

Uplifting desert blues

Friday 8 September 2023 8380

Tamikrest grabs you and effortlessly drags you along with the rousing sounds of their desert blues right from their first sounds. The band members each come from different regions of the world and intertwine Tuareg with modern rock influences. The band’s name means ‘connection’ and ‘overlap’, the ideal words to describe the band. With their music, Tamikrest pays tribute to the Tuareg – or Kel Tamasheq identity and make the culture accessible to everyone. On Friday, September 8th, the five-piece formation will be at PAARD.

Tamikrest’s latest album was released in 2020 during the pandemic, delaying a triumphant march for the band for a while. But now this journey finally comes. On the record Tamotaït (hope) the band shows a thicker dressed sound, with the booming bass tones, hypnotic vocals and repetitive guitar riffs that we are used to. Just like the previous albums, Tamotaït also has a political tone.

“ Wanneer je je ogen dicht deed en je jezelf mee liet voeren op de klanken van de Malinese muzikanten van Tamikrest waande je jezelf in West-Afrika aangevoerd door de heerlijke klanktapijten die wij in de Westerse wereld woestijn blues zijn gaan noemen. “
