Groove in the tunes of artists that have played in Lowlands and Parkpop, and find out for yourselves what is happening in the musical scene in town! This is the first concert of Expats in The Hague, mean to support the work of talented new artists, and to make it known in wider audiences. Special thanks to Jon Tarifa for joining our gig !!

Julie Scott

vocalist, guitar player, composer, vocal coach and creative entrepreneur Julie Scott has been inspired by diverse artists including David Bowie, Mark Lanegan and PJ Harvey. Her music has a special attraction; intimate, fragile and the capability to excite. Her voice is wilful, atmospheric, with a hypnotic effect. When Julie sings you are drawn to listen intently. Julie is a former member (singer/songwriter/guitarist) of successful Dutch bands Mizpah (Lowlands, Paradiso, SXSW Texas), and she was vocalist in jazz ensemble Dash! Recently Julie has been recording her solo album, to be released later this year. Julie and Bas Flier have recently formed the new band Knotwilg. At the moment they are working on a new CD.

Roeland Drost

Roeland Drost works as a musician, actor, vocal coach and pianoteacher. He plays solo improvised piano concertos sometimes, likes to work especially with others, sometimes together with different art disciplines (theatre, poetry, dance) and regularly he performs together with Julie Scott and her songs. Together they formed the band can_of_be, in which Roeland was the keyboardplayer.

Drum, Bass and Poetry

What happens when a poet collaborates with a bassplayer and a drummer? Words dance on basslines, basslines make love to drumbeats and the whole echoes tribal rythms in the heart of the listener. Lotte Asveld (text), Virgil Rerimassie (bass)and Chris van ’t Hof (drum) first met while waiting on the bus. Inspired by the rain  pounding on the roof of the bus stop, Chris started drumming on his knee, Virgil joined in by imitating a bass with his mouth and Lotte came up with fitting lyrics. So the first song of drum, bass and poetry was born. Others followed shortly after, often after an intense session of tantra-meditation. Drum, Bass and Poetry since then performed in smoky jazz cafés, at transcendental workshops, along the side of the road and in the centre of ecstatic parties. The band has a particular talent to liven up funerals. In daily live, Chris is a zen yoga-coach, Virgil is a chef in an Indonesian restaurant and Lotte is a product designer for the Body Shop. All three believe that for successful living it is essential to create your own myths.

Big Sur

Big Sur’s first EP Tales about coming of age tells 5 stories about a guy’s transition into adulthood. Front man Borja wrote these songs about his issues with passing timeand the longing of irresponsible careless youth when he traded his home in the Canary Islands for The Hague. There he found Estonian guitar player Karl and when they saw Italian drummer Francesco playing modern jazz, they knew th…ey had to form a band. After they started playing gigs and recorded their EP, it got about time to get some local blood in the band, which they found in the form of singer Josette.

On stage, sax players José Vera Bello or Genzo Okabe join us to explore the jazzy tunes in our pop rock songs. With band members from different countries, Big Sur feels right at home in the multicultural The Hague!
