THEATERCOLLEGE: OUR MAN ON THE FUTURE OF THE MIDDLE EAST

Tuesday 4 November 2025

Please be aware that this show is fully Dutch-spoken.

It takes a different way of looking at it, but the Middle-East is a testing ground for the future. International museums are landing in the Persian Gulf-region, the latest Indiana Jones movie was mostly filmed in Morocco and we’re flying to all-inclusive destinations to the Red Sea. Martin Garrix is performing in Jeddah, and in Mecca you can find a copy of the Big Ben, right in between the other high-rises around the Kaaba. Transavia has flights directly to Beirut. Qatar is a new business-hub, and even in the turbulent Libya you can find singers uploading their latest hits to Youtube. And Iran… Iran has become a secular hub, where women march the streets to fight for their right not to wear a headscarf.

Are they following us, or are we following them?

After the show the floor will be opened to conversation

A testing ground van also be a cynical place. Israel is trying to create it’s own future in Gaza, at the cost of the Palestinian people. In this theatercollege, storyteller Thomas Erdbrink (Our man in Tehran, Our man with the Taliban, former bureauchief at the New York Times) pulls us into a story that shows the other side of the region. With his open demeanor he shows the public that there is a lot more going on than we see on the news. Using videos, recorded Zoom-interviews and music by  singer-songwriter Naaz, he shifts our view of a region that our prejudices often shape our opinions of.
