PROJAZZ@GR8: WAAN

Albumpresentation

Thursday 12 February 2026

WAAN is the brainchild of saxophonist Bart Wirtz and keyboardist Emiel van Rijthoven. Together with bassist Matteo Mazzú and drummer Mark Schilders, they create a sound in which the boundaries between electronic and acoustic, dancefloor energy and jazz improvisation fade away. Since their debut, WAAN has been known for a raw, adventurous style where groove-driven electronics, atmospheric melodies, and improvisational freedom meet.

In the studio, the band works closely with producer Oscar de Jong (Kraak & Smaak). Their debut album Echo Echo (Sonar Kollektiv, 2023) received rave reviews, earned two Edison Jazz nominations, and gained worldwide airplay, including on Jamie Cullum’s BBC programs. The album led to an extensive tour of festivals and venues such as Paradiso, Bimhuis, Transition, So What’s Next, Amersfoort Jazz, RAUW, InJazz, Eurosonic, Jazzahead (DE), and more.

In 2024, WAAN released a live EP capturing the tension and interplay between acoustic musicianship and electronic textures on stage. They are now working on their second album, We Want WAAN, which will be released on January 23, 2026 via Sonar Kollektiv.
