Opgezwolle enjoys legendary status in the Dutch music scene. The iconic rap group is one of the most influential hip-hop acts in the Netherlands. Ricardo McDougal, as Rico, experienced all the highlights, but also experienced difficult periods with alcohol and drug addiction. How did he survive a lonely struggle with himself in the spotlight?

Twenty years after the release of Eigen Wereld, one of the best Dutch hip-hop albums of all time, Rico takes the stage with the theater evening “Phreako Rico’s Wereld.” He takes you back to Opgezwolle’s heyday and its dark side.

Through beats, poems, spoken word, remarkable images, and new music, Rico offers a unique glimpse into the life of an artist struggling with addiction. Because five rehabs later, there’s still work to be done every day.

Rico inspires with his story and shows how a love for hip-hop can change lives. “Phreako” Rico’s World is for the enthusiast who cares about their own world and the world around them.

Ricardo McDougal rose to fame as Rico from Opgezwolle. “Rated R” is his most recent solo album. The book “Mijn eigen wereld” (My Own World) was published last April.
