Podcast Studio Kyiv welcomes Maria Alyokhina

Thursday 26 June 2025

Vladimir Putin and his regime have held Russia in an iron grip for decades. Maria Alyokhina knows this all too well. For nearly 15 years, she has resisted the suffocating repression in her country with her band Pussy Riot. In 2012, the group became the global face of the Russian protest movement. But how does she continue to stand strong as an artist and activist while Russia slides further into authoritarianism?

In a live edition of the new podcast Station Kyiv, journalists Hubert Smeets and Stefan de Vries sit down with Maria Alyokhina. How has she seen her country transform into the dictatorship it is today? And what toll has her resistance taken on her personally and on those around her? War, opposition, and the future—Alyokhina shares what Russia means to her and how she believes her homeland can move forward.

Even in exile, Alyokhina continues to raise her voice. Her performance Riot Day—which will be staged later that evening at PAARD—tells her personal story of protest, police violence, and imprisonment. In this conversation, she explains why we must continue to resist oppression and authoritarianism.

Station Kyiv is the Eastern Europe podcast from Kennisplatform RAAM & Haagsch College.

Please note: In conversation with Pussy Riot is a separate event from the Riot Days performance later that night.
