Miss Martha High‘s contribution to the development of soul is undeniable. Born in Victoria and raised in Washington DC, she started her singing career at a young age. During a talent show at her local school she was discovered by none other than Bo Diddley. He introduced her to upcoming band The Jewels. Not much later she joined Bo’s band and recorded a hit with legend George Clinton. James Brown discovered her in 1965 and that was the start of Martha’s 32-year career alongside The Godfather, being the longest background singer he has had.
