Paardcafé: Fresh Brew by Albeda

Thursday 6 April 2023 2023

What music and coffee have in common is that sometimes it’s time for something new. That is why this evening there are four young emerging acts from South Holland ready for you to listen to, just like a Fresh Brew.

Alysha Deanne is a soulful singer-songwriter from Vlaardingen. You can recognize her music by the warm full sound. Carried by a rather unique voice. Her songs contain soul and pop elements with a jazzy edge. Think of Alicia Keys, Olivia Dean or Lianne La Havas. She combines these different styles and this is refreshing. She sees music as a place where she can express her feelings. Inspires people with the music through her narrative way of writing. Brings peace through her songs. Nature, poetry and contact with people are her greatest source of inspiration. Her songs tell stories with poetic lyrics or just where it says.

Tara Thomas, also known as sy-ki, is a Dutch producer, composer and singer-songwriter. She started producing in 2018 and has been writing songs since she was little. ‘sy-ki’ is a reference to Psyche, the goddess of the soul and spirit. Tara’s songs usually start with contemplating and analyzing feelings, people, and ideas. She knows no boundaries that stop her from how music is supposed to be and always listens to her instincts. Yet she finds a middle ground and you can hear the coherence of all her songs. Therefore, each song contains the specific sy-ki sound that one recognizes.

Thrilled is a Rotterdam Shoegaze/Dreampop band formed in April 2022 by Edward Smith and Devon van Wijngaarden. The band initially started to provide Van Wijngaarden and Smith with a band for showcases of their MBO music education, but it soon became clear that it worked well to continue with it outside of school. After rotating between band members for a while, they now have a permanent line-up that consists of: Edward Smith on vocals/guitar, Devon van Wijngaarden on vocals/guitar, Minne Davids on drums and Ana Hernández Barrera on bass. Thrilled their sound is heavily inspired by Shoegaze, this is a genre where the guitar sound is central and can hardly be recognized as a guitar. By stacking many different effects on top of each other you get a very dreamy melancholic sound.

One calls it cynical, the other having fun. Sasha Sailor mentions both. With a mix of indie, post-punk and alternative rock, the band turns every stage upside down. Think of Personal Trainer, Deep Sea Diver and Wet Leg. You quickly sing along to the nonchalant and recognizable lyrics, making Sasha Sailor a surprising night out of your normal working day.
